Kolkata has a very different character from other big cities of India. This is a city that carries the traces of the British colonial period the most and still makes you feel it in every corner.
This is natural because Kolkata, or Calcutta as we know it more, was the capital of British India until 1911, and became the center of trade and education.
The docks and wharves stretching along the banks of the HOOGLY river were filled with barges and ships loading and unloading goods. In order to convey the riches of India to the merchants, the first railway was laid in this region.
The country’s most important universities were established in this city in the first half of the 19th century. As a matter of fact, Kolkata Presidency University, founded in 1817 as Hindu College, is the oldest college in all of India.
